5 doable ways to stay healthy-ish during the holidays.
An ah.mi dose of real-life wellness from Rach.
Hi there!
I hope you’re having a great week and are getting excited about the holiday next week. I wanted to send along some of the ah.mi tricks I’ve learned for staying “with it” during the busiest time of the year.
1. Stick to the Weekly Rotations
Since we eat out a ton during holidays and I find myself ordering delivery much more than normal, when we are making food at home we try to keep it healthy: taco bowls, eggs and beans, or steak/chicken and veggies. I also don’t typically drink during the week. Linking a few of my go-to weekly ah.mi dinners here:
2. Prioritize Movement (#RunForAng)
Making time to workout feels especially hard during these months. Our annual #RunForAng challenge in November always keeps me motivated. I’m never at the top of the leaderboard, but having the goal of hitting 30 miles with the commitment of others for the whole month keeps me moving. This year I’ve been trying to jog 1 mile per day to get there. There’s over 50 of you on the leaderboard doing it with me!
3. NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)
Since the weather is so nice in South Florida during the holiday months, I try to do as much walking as possible throughout the day. You can find me doing early morning 15-20 minute walks with my little girl, Isla, and taking work calls on walks as much as possible. My personal trainer, Alyssa, tells me that consistently moving is one of the most important factors in staying healthy and fit. This article provides a good summary of NEAT (“NEAT usually plays a bigger role in calorie burning than working out”).
4. Never Miss Twice.
I read this years ago when I read James Clear’s book, Atomic Habits, and it has always stuck with me. “The first mistake is never the one that ruins you. It is the spiral of repeated mistakes that follow. Missing once is an accident. Missing twice is the start of a new habit.”
This used to be my M.O.: a few days of not working out would turn into a few weeks and then the feeling of blah would creep back in. When life gets in the way, or I just don’t feel like moving, I try to remind myself of the simple habit - never miss twice (although sometimes for me it’s a miss of 3-4 days and then I’m back at it).
5. Set Up An Accountability Plan for January.
Since starting ah.mi, I always make sure to have a plan to commit with the ah.mi crew for Super Clean January. It’s our ah.mi version of a new year reset (with accountability) so you *actually* stick with it. Super Clean January is only available to our paid subscribers, so make sure you upgrade to paid below to get all of the challenge details!
I hope this content serves you as a reminder that we can all continue to keep up with some healthy-ish habits during the holidays.
Enjoy your time with family and friends!
Xx,
Rach
